Brett Hadley is the President of Mountain Home Services in Layton, Utah
Here is Brett Hadley’s approach to contractor management and scaling a successful multi-trade business.
The Core Value: Intentional Personal Growth
Brett Hadley’s ultimate goal is to foster a culture of growth. This philosophy is encapsulated in one of the company’s core values: “intentional personal growth”
His belief is that while technical expertise, like a plumber having gone to school, is essential, the human element is what ensures success in the home
. As he puts it, “We’re in the people business. The plumbing part is just what happens after we take care of the people” .
Learning Grit: Fired by His Dad and Hired Back
Brett’s journey started in the family business, Hadley Electric, which his grandfather founded in 1954
-
A Valuable Lesson: As a teenager, Brett was fired by his father for prioritizing social life over putting in plugs and switches at a job site
. -
Subway Training: He was made to get a job at Subway, where he learned accountability. This experience was “the best thing he ever could have done” for him, teaching him to be committed, be on time, and stick to a schedule
. -
The Result: After a year and a half to two years at Subway, he returned and became his father’s “best employee”
.
Brett ultimately pivoted from the family’s new construction focus to the service model
Scaling the Multi-Trade Business: Electrical, HVAC, and Plumbing
The company that was formerly known as Master Electrical Service and Mountain Air ultimately rebranded as Mountain Home Services
-
HVAC Business: Approximately $13 million
-
Electrical Contractors: Approximately $6 million
-
Plumbing Business: Approximately $1 million (new division)
They also maintain revenue streams from generators and fireplaces to help fill in shoulder seasons
Strategic Growth and Contractor Management
The business’s commitment to growth led to a major strategic decision in 2023: joining The Wrench Group
Operationally, Brett advises a strict focus on numbers and accountability, a principle often taught by a trades business coach:
-
Know Your Metrics: “Profit is sanity, revenue is vanity,” is the mindset that drives the business
. -
Accountability: Brett emphasizes that there must be “all the levels of accountability” from the top down
. -
Training & Field Support: Contractor management services must include regular ride-a longs to support technicians and implement new service models
. -
Future Growth: Mountain Home Services is currently budgeting for a 10–15% growth rate next year
.
Brett’s overall advice is to take the emotion out of business and know that when a partner or leader is driving you to be better, it’s because they care about your success
